10 of the Most Popular Clothes Dryers in New Zealand 2025

Discover the most popular dryers in NZ in 2025

The easy way to find inspiration for your new dryer.

When the heavens open and washing lines stay sodden for days, or when slow drying times for laundry hanging inside on drying racks lead to musty-smelling clothes, a clothes dryer can be a lifesaver.

Whether you’re limited for outdoor drying space or you’re trying to keep your busy household on track with clean, dry school uniforms and sports kits, the right clothes dryer transforms laundry day - and these days, it needn’t cost you too much to run, depending on the type of technology the dryer uses.

If you’re unsure what will be right for you, check out this list of 10 of our most popular clothes dryers being bought by customers across New Zealand.

Snapshot of popular dryers in New Zealand

Type of dryer
While there are three main types of clothes dryer available in New Zealand - vented, condenser, and heat pump - this list features just vented and heat pump models - an equal number of each.

Vented dryers blow out hot moist air out via a duct or into your laundry space. Condenser dryers trap moisture in a tank or drain it away, so they don’t need external venting. Heat pump dryers are an advanced type of condenser dryer that uses lower temperatures and recycles hot air, making them gentler on clothes and the most energy efficient choice. While gas dryers exist, they’re rare in New Zealand.

Heat pump models have a higher price point than other dryer types, but their lower running costs and gentler treatment of fabrics (that prevents over-drying) make them increasingly popular. They are heavier than vented models and therefore can’t be wall mounted, though they are usually stackable on top of a front load washing machine, which is handy if your laundry room has limited floor space. Their lower temperature drying means that their drying cycles are generally slower than those of vented machines.

Capacity
On this list you’ll see dryers ranging from 6kg to 9kg. Around 7 to 8kg is the most common size, which suits small families. A 6kg dryer can be good for a single or two-person household, while 9kg machines suit large families who tackle big loads several times a week.

Price
Prices span from budget-friendly vented models under $500 ($$$), through mid-range dryers at between $500-$1,500 ($$$), right up to premium heat pump dryers over $1,500 ($$$).

Prices are based on the Recommended Retail Price (RRP), though at Appliances Online New Zealand we often sell below RRP, so just click the links for current prices and more details.

Energy efficiency
Because they use significantly less energy, the heat pump dryers on this list have ratings between 7 to 9 Energy Stars. In comparison, vented dryers usually sit on 2 Stars.

Running cost
Higher energy efficiency equates to lower running costs. Heat pump models on this list have estimated annual running costs of around $60 or less, while the vented models cost around twice that. This difference in efficiency adds up. A heat pump dryer may save several hundred dollars across its lifespan, compared to a vented model of the same size, and thereby cancel out its higher purchase price.

If you compare the Onix 8kg vented dryer (#2) with the Onix 8kg heat pump dryer (#6), for example, you can see that it costs around two and a half times as much to run the vented model as the heat pump model. If you were to use it just twice a week, the difference in running costs would be around $150 per year. Within three years of use, you’d likely have cancelled out its higher purchase price.

The estimated annual running costs shown below are calculated using each dryer’s stated annual energy consumption, multiplied by an average New Zealand electricity cost of 35c per kWh as well as once-a-week use, which is the standard reference point in Energy Star ratings for dryers. Actual costs will vary depending on how often you dry clothes and your local electricity tariff.

Colour
Most trending models are finished in classic white, but a couple of premium Bosch models add interest with graphite or silver-toned trims.

Warranty
Most brands provide 2 years of manufacturer’s warranty, with Onix offering 3 years and Seiki 1 year.
